Best Wine Certification in Paris: What It’s Really Like to Study Wine in France

Wine certification in Paris. A session at Paris Wine Academy

And why it might change how you see wine, travel, and yourself.

When people search for a wine certification in Paris or anywhere in France, they’re often looking for more than just a course. They’re looking for access. For understanding. For a way into something that feels elusive and deeply rooted, the world of French wine.

That was me, too, once.

Back then, I thought wine certifications were all about memorization: grapes, soil types, regions, laws. And while that knowledge matters, I’ve since learned that it only becomes meaningful when it’s tied to people, place, and lived experience. That’s the heart of what we do at Paris Wine Academy.

So, why get a wine certification in France?

Because studying wine where it’s grown changes everything.

You’re not just learning about Bordeaux, you’re drinking it alongside a plate of duck confit in the 5th arrondissement, or asking a winemaker in Beaujolais how climate change is shifting their harvest calendar. You’re not just reviewing maps of Burgundy, you’re standing on the slope, glass in hand, realizing that terroir isn’t theory. It’s a fact.

For some people, it’s professional. For others, it’s deeply personal. But everyone walks away with a new way of seeing (and tasting) the world.

Wine Certification in France: What Paris Wine Academy Offers

Paris Wine Academy was created to offer something I couldn’t find elsewhere: wine education that was rigorous, but rooted in place. Programs that honored both the academic side of wine and the cultural nuance that textbooks can’t teach.

We offer three paths, depending on where you are in your journey.

1. French Wine Essentials

For curious travelers, lifelong learners, and people who want to taste with context.

This 3.5-day program is based in Paris and includes classroom sessions, regional tastings, a market visit, and a day trip to a nearby wine region like Champagne or the Loire. We designed it for wine lovers who want more than just a certificate; they want meaning. It’s also great for people living in Paris who want to feel more fluent in the wine culture around them.

You don’t need any prior experience, and you can take the certification exam or just come for the experience.

2. French Wine Scholar – Immersive

For professionals, students, and career-changers who want to go deep.

This is our flagship 7-day experience based in Lyon, with travel through Burgundy, Beaujolais, and the Northern Rhône. You’ll study the theory, meet the people, walk the vines, and eat with the winemakers. It’s designed for professionals or those transitioning into the wine world who want real, tangible experience they can reference in interviews, tastings, or sales conversations.

We keep this group small (max 6 people) because those conversations and shared moments matter.

3. French Wine Scholar – Classroom Only (Paris)

For those who want the certification, but not the travel.

This is a 6-day intensive in Paris — ideal for residents or professionals who want to earn the French Wine Scholar credential without leaving the city. It covers all major wine regions, includes guided tastings, and prepares you for the Wine Scholar Guild’s official exam.

Why this matters, beyond certification

What I’ve learned, both as a guide and as someone who’s gone through the formal wine study process, is this: Wine makes more sense when it’s rooted in context.
When you meet the woman who makes your Chardonnay. When you walk past the church where her grandfather was married, and where she now holds tastings in the cellar beneath it. When you eat the food that grows alongside the wine.

That’s why we do what we do. Not just to help you pass an exam, but to help you understand the why behind the wine.

Want to join us?
